Loghi
Tuscany, Italy
The Loghi family farm is situated within the up-and-coming Orcia Valley D.O.C., as well as an area called Crete Senesi, is famous for their white truffles. Located a mere seventeen kilometers north of Montalcino, the property consists of 52 hectares of land, much of it is covered in natural forests. Valentino Berni, a third generation winemaker and truffle hunter, tends to his 4 hectares of vineyards and 4 hectares of olive trees at Azienda Loghi.
Valentino’s farming practices on his sandy clay soils are pristine and strictly natural. The methods in the cellar follow the minimal approach in the fields; Valentino spontaneously ferments his reds and uses only used barrique and large Slavonic oak during elevage. The use of sulphur is kept to an absolute minimum and is only added at bottling for stabilization. The wines are fresh and approachable, with great structure and class.
New for 2021 - Valentino’s longtime dream of making a Brunello and a Rosso di Montalcino have been realized. Valentino had been working since 2014 to acquire a 2ha parcel of vines just west of Torrenieri, on the northeast slope of the Montalcino hill. After releasing a 2015 and 2016 Brunello, he finally gained ownership of this organic vineyard, planted on calcareous soils at 280 meters of elevation.
Our Selections
Loghi Rosso IGT Toscana 2019
The 2019 Rosso Toscano is simply a delight in the glass. A blend of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Merlot, the wine pops with aromas and flavors of bright red fruits and a signature Tuscan earthiness. The hand-harvested Sangiovese and Merlot were left to naturally ferment separately in stainless steel tanks, and once complete, the Merlot was moved to first and second use French barrique for 6 months before it was blended with the Sangiovese to age another year together in tank. No filtration was done before bottling and the result is complex yet very easy to drink.
A nose of fresh cherries, dark plums, lots of flowers, and crushed rocks, leads to a palate that is distinctly Tuscany. Rich in structure that is full of acidity and only the soft kind of chewy tannins. The Merlot seems to wrap its plush arms around the nervy Sangiovese, melding together as a perfect match of fruit, structure, and length.
Loghi Rosso di Montalcino 2020
From one hectare of vineyards on the northeast side of the hill of Montalcino, near the village of Torrenieri. 100% Sangiovese Grosso from 15 year old vines planted in an organically maintained vineyard on calcareous soils at 280 meters of elevation. Spontaneous fermentation is done in stainless steel followed by eight months aging in large 20hl Slavonian botti. The wine is made at the Martoccia estate which is within the DOC.
This is a graceful yet serious Rosso with good structure and a vibrant, fresh palate. Soft, perfectly ripe cherry fruit, forest floor, cocoa and a bit of earth can be found on both the nose and the palate.
Loghi Brunello di Montalcino 2015
New! Valentino has long dreamed of making both a Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino. With the assistance of his friend Luca Brunelli, Valentino now makes both from a 16 year old two hectare vineyard located on the northeast side of the Montalcino hill, just west of the town of Torrenieri.
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino comes from a special selection of fruit from a 1 ha parcel of vines that have the lowest yields and the most densely concentrated grapes. The wine naturally ferments in stainless steel tanks before aging 24 months in large Slavonian oak botti. The Brunello 2015 featured red cherry, coriander, eucalyptus, and high toned fruit. Built for the long haul, this wonderfully expressive and layered wine can be enjoyed now, as it is clearly and distinctly and fantastically, Brunello.
