Château Haut-La Péreyre

Haut-Benauge, Bordeaux, France

Château Haut-La Péreyre produced its first vintage in 1881 in the lieu-dit of Péreyre, back up in the pastoral hills of Entre-Deux-Mers. Over the years, it sold its wine in bulk to négociants until Olivier Cailleux’s parents began estate bottling in 1974. Olivier himself was given keys to the domaine in 1994 after completing his enology studies and doing internships in South Africa, New Zealand, and at Cos d’Estournel. Today he is the sixth generation to manage the family winemaking.

The sub-appellation of Haut Benauge was created in 1955 as a superior zone for whites within Entre-Deux Mers thanks to its hillsides and limestone soils. Olivier farms 50 hectares of grapes at Château Haut-La Péreyre and earned HEV certification (High Environmental Value) in 2019.

Haut-La Péreyre Bordeaux Blanc 2023

From a 5.5ha parcel of HVE certified vines in the hilly hinterland behind the ancient, walled river-town of Cadillac. The vines grow on a mix of clay and limestone in the Haut-Benauge subzone of Entre-Deux-Mers — a small, strikingly beautiful and immensely expressive appellation long recognized for white wines. Olivier blends Sauvignon Blanc (55%), Sauvignon Gris (15%), and Sémillon (30%) for his Bordeaux Blanc.

The grapes are pressed and the juice is fermented and aged entirely in stainless steel. The wine is lightly filtered before bottling but neither fined nor cold-stabilized.

A bone-dry, refreshing white Bordeaux full of juicy citrus and subtle grapefruit notes. Medium-bodied and round in style with bright acidity, a hint of honeysuckle. Don’t forget, Bordeaux vies with Sancerre as the true home for Sauvignon Blanc!
